It is the Eve of the New Year and while most people are prepping for parties and deciding what weight loss method they are going to use this year to finally get the body they dreamed of, most people miss the most important goal to set – their spiritual development.
As a medium, I get to hear some amazing stories from souls that have crossed over. Just when I think I have heard it all, another soul will tell me a story or lesson that completely wows me.
This year, I want to share with you a big “aha” moment that happened for me while connected to someone’s loved one who had crossed over into the light. I’ll also share with you why my guides wanted me to stress the importance of this advice with everyone I meet for it is the most valuable currency or commodity in the world.
The Message: “What I learned after I crossed into the light was that the most important priorities that I held in my life were in the wrong order. What I felt was the most valuable had little weight over here. The truth is that JOY is the Real Currency. And I wish I had more of that when I crossed over.”
Yes, you read that right! JOY IS THE REAL CURRENCY!
Chills ran through my body when this loving father shared his revelation with his daughter during her session. He spoke of his time on earth as dedicating most of his time to being the kind of man he believed he was supposed to be – a hard worker, a provider, a contributor. His commitment was to create a better life for his family than he had growing up. He was very proud of his accomplishments and the opportunities he created for his loved ones. He certainly was a good man with a good heart.
He said he was very surprised when he crossed over into the light and learned that those priorities and good works on earth were not as important as he believed. While he focused much of his energy and intentions on creating that kind of life that he believed was the most important, he said he didn’t spend enough moments in what truly mattered – in JOY.
I asked if he was possibly a workaholic that was not able to spend time with his loved ones and before I could get another word in he quickly responded “No!”
“Melissa, many times while I was spending time with my loved ones, I wasn’t fully present or engaged in what was happening around me. My mind wandered and I spent much time thinking about what needed to be done or how much time I had until the next activity.”
He lamented that even if he was present, he wasted a lot of time not focusing on the joy of the moment. Sometimes, his mind would run thinking “we are having such a great time right now but we would have an even BETTER time if we had ____”. These thoughts robbed him of the joy in the moment. He regretted that there were so many moments he took for granted.
When I asked him about moments that he did appreciate and lived in JOY, he recounted the time he held his first child in his arms – the world slowed down. For that moment, he was connected to the purest joy on earth while his heart grew with a love he’s never known. He said that when he crossed over, those kinds of moments were what he cherished the most.
Surprisingly, other moments of joy that he never considered, were moments he completely forgot or thought of as unimportant. These moments consisted of a laugh or a smile between friends. A moment he took on a busy day, to say a kind word to a friend who was feeling down. The moment he first began to fall in love. Moments where he allowed himself to throw his head back and laugh really hard at a funny joke.
As I asked my own guides (and other souls that have crossed over) about this message, they confirmed that it was absolutely true but took it a step further by revealing that JOY is VITAL to your soul’s growth and purpose.
Now, I understand the many reasons why souls come to earth – to learn lessons, to have experiences, to feel what it’s like to be filled with this infinite love and power, to reconnect with others, etc. I have heard them throughout the years of channeling. But never once have I heard something so profound as it being the MOST IMPORTANT experience for your soul’s growth and purpose.
So, I have spent a good portion of the year asking other souls who have crossed over to give me their perspective on it and how it played out in their time on earth. I have spoken to my guides a lot about this.
What I have come to learn is that every other purpose or reason why we are here is tied to this very thing we call JOY. It is, in fact, fundamental. No other “purpose” exists without it.
Mind = Blown.
That means that every goal – to earn more, love more, experience more, travel more, accomplish more, etc – is completely empty if it is not spent IN JOY.
So, this year, if it’s one goal you set for yourself, commit to your spiritual growth in this way.
BE IN JOY as often as you can.
Every. Single. Day.
So, how the heck can you do that?
Well, you can put down your cell phone when you can be connecting with another. You can learn to be present with yourself and others by ignoring the voice in your head that is spitting out every thing that you “should” be doing right now. You can allow yourself to fully BE engaged in the moment by observing everything as if you’re going to lose your eyesight tomorrow and this moment is the only vision that will carry you through for the rest of your life.
Observe around you and think of all the things you are grateful for in the moment. Have a running gratitude list in your head as you go through your day. Smile at the next person you see – even if you look like a weirdo. Give someone a random, genuine compliment (don’t be creepy, though). Go out of your way to make someone’s day! Pay for someone’s coffee. Hold the door for someone.
Important: Have NO expectations of the interaction. Just be a beaming light emitting from your heart.
This doesn’t mean you have to trade your blazer for peace signs and bell bottoms while singing kumbaya! We are still human and we have human needs. Joy feels good but it won’t fill an empty stomach, right? So, you don’t need to quit your job to do this. I promise.
Set a reminder (or 20) on your phone every day to stop and be IN JOY. Whatever it is you’re doing – writing an email at work, taking out the trash, driving in traffic, sitting on the toilet – I want you to first observe everything around you, name 3 things you are grateful for in your situation, then I want you to smile BIG.

Yes, you will feel like a weirdo. GOOD! At first, change is awkward.
And just so you feel a little better about this, I’ll throw in some science stuff with the woo woo….
There’s this biological process that happens when we smile. Different neurotransmitters are released when we smile that not only relaxes your body but can lower your heart rate and blood pressure, it can act as a natural pain reliever, and it can actually serve as an anti-depressant.
So, if anything, this exercise will give you the effects of some meds out there without the side effects!
One thing I know for sure, living your life with many moments of JOY will bring you more peace within yourself, ease anxiety, make you feel purposeful, attract more joyous moments, attract more like-minded people, connect you with a happiness and satisfaction that nothing else in the world can do for you, and it will allow you to feel a part of this world like you didn’t before.
That’s a pretty good trade off.
So, here’s to an easy actionable step in 2018 that you can simply do in your life every day.
It doesn’t cost anything but your attention for moments at a time but can literally change your entire life (and after).
JOY IS THE REAL CURRENCY! And it’s absolutely ABUNDANT!
